AWNY Year in Review: President’s Letter

WRITTEN BY BELINDA JACKSON

Hello to all our members,

I hope everyone has had a great start to 2017. Just as Spring marks new beginnings in this city, it also coincides with the election of our volunteer-led Australian Women in New York (AWNY) steering committee.

Now is your opportunity to get involved. Alongside a dynamic group of women, you will give back, guide the programs and direction of our community, make fabulous friends and most importantly, have fun. We’d love for you to join us.

All positions are available for re-election including: President, Vice President, Secretary, Co-chair (leadership) positions available for Communications, Events, Mums & Dads, Charity and New Members. Plus there are numerous positions available for volunteer coordinators for Events, Communications, Charity, and Mums & Dads.

If you are interested in joining us, submit your nomination by Thursday, April 13 online here, and attend our upcoming Annual General Meeting (April 17).

If you are wondering what our committee does, then read on!

What does the AWNY Committee get up to?

AWNY is a platform for Australian and Kiwi women to support each other through the craziness that is New York – whether it’s getting settled, or stretching for growth – we are here to help you understand more about yourself and how to thrive in this city.

Inspiring Aussies, Alan and Pam Skuse, celebrate 15 years and 250 lives saved by volunteering at a Mexican orphanage

By Melissa Bickford

Living in New York, it’s very easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of this fast paced life. We’re all so ‘busy’. Earlier this year I came across an article on Alan and Pam Skuse. I took some time to read about the incredible work they’ve done with Misión México. Their story gives me goosebumps and is a reminder to maintain perspective. Watch this video to see why:

This couple have selflessly devoted a significant portion of their lives to helping orphans who come from backgrounds of poverty and neglect. They boldly left their comfortable beachside lives on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, their children and grandchildren, to lend their skills to a small community in Mexico who needed help. Join AWNY to help at Sanctuary for Families as a “Holiday Helper” – December 8th

As November rapidly approaches and we begin to think about pumpkins, turkeys and snowflakes, Sanctuary for Families is already planning for the holiday season. We hope to make it possible for more than 2,500 clients to celebrate the holidays this year, and we need your help to do it! Sanctuary collects gifts for the thousands of clients we serve, aiming to give every adult, teen and child at least one holiday gift. Sanctuary needs help sorting, organizing and wrapping the amazing gifts that we receive. We would love to have you volunteer as a “Holiday Helper” in our Lower Manhattan office.

Sanctuary for Families

The Australian Women in New York (AWNY) is a non-profit organization, created as part of the social and cultural program within the Australian American Association. As a non-profit organization, revenues raised from our events are invested back into our members and donated to other non-profit organizations, as determined by our committee. AWNY has a rich history of volunteering with various organizations in New York. We have an opportunity to partner with Sanctuary for Families and to participate in various volunteering activities within this charity. Sanctuary for Families (SFF) is New York’s leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence. Every year, Sanctuary empowers thousands of adults and children to move from fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive range of services. Read more about Sanctuary for Families here.

Volunteer Opportunity

We have an opportunity for 6 people to volunteer on Monday 8th December from 10am to 1pm. Please email awny@aaanyc.org to express your interest.
