The last month of summer is exciting for NY-based tennis fans as the tour hits its North American leg. There are important tournaments in DC, Cincinnati, Toronto, and Montreal before the tennis community converges on New York for the final grand slam of the year—The US Open.
I was never interested in visiting Nashville. In fact, I actively avoided it. My dad constantly played old-school country music, blaring through the house when I was growing up, which I hated, so I figured Nashville, being the home of country music, was not the place for me. How wrong I was.
An intriguing photograph of an extinct bird joined other works from New Zealand in The Met in 2025. Solitary Female Huia by Fiona Pardington (2006, inkjet print, reprinted 2024) is one of a series of confronting, mournful bird photographs, several of which can be seen at the Venice Biennale now and through until November 2026. The Met exhibits just one photograph from this remarkable group, but it is such a compelling work that much can be learned from it about the artist, her philosophy and the cultural traditions she draws on.
