The Big Aussie Sports Day and BBQ Lands in NYC

With summer of 2021 in full swing, we all agreed that it was the perfect time to celebrate life in New York by throwing a real Aussie barbie for New York’s Australians. If you stopped by the AWNY table, did you remember to sign up for our Newsletter? In case you missed it, click here.

Prospect Park’s Nethermead bbq and picnic area — a top spot for an Aussie barbie

In a first-time partnership, Australian Women in New York joined forces with America Josh, American Australian Association and Advance.org, and secured a location big enough to comfortably host a large number of Aussies (and their dogs) in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. We brought in a truckload of authentic snags from Aussie Pies and Sausages in L.A., picked up 40 loaves of real Aussie bread from Cobs in Stamford, CT, rented some massive BBQ grills and put on a really big sausage sizzle.

It was an AWESOME day for it — and after the challenging year we’ve all had, there was nothing quite like seeing and hearing 420 Aussies enjoying an afternoon in the park with their friends and families with a snag in hand. The temperature was high, so relaxing and having a good laugh together on our picnic blankets under the beautiful shady trees was all it took to bring out the big Aussie smiles.

My homemade lemonade proved to be a real crowd pleaser for everyone who visited AWNY’s stand, with many coming back for seconds, thirds and even fourths! We enjoyed some music provided by AAA’s arts scholars, picked up a goody bag full of Aussie treats from AAA, and the kids had a ton of fun with the water soakers. We watched in amazement as Josh lead a Weetbix eating contest, possibly the first ever thong toss in the U.S.A., and cheered as the winners of the local Australian-business raffle prizes were drawn. To top it all off, we may have gotten a touch of the warm and fuzzies seeing the footy being kicked around and watching the local cricket team show the kids how to aim for the stumps (no bats allowed). Everyone had a terrific day bringing Oz to New York City!

Our thanks go to

The Big Aussie Sports Day and BBQ was a huge success and would not have been possible without our incredible volunteers, our partners America Josh, American Australian Association, and Advance.org, our sponsors OFX and Cigna Global, support from the Australian Consulate-General New York, NY Kookaburras cricket club, and New York Magpies football team, and the generous raffle donations from local Australian businesses You Are What You Sleep, Boomerang Bites, Tribal Towels, Dinkum, Bourke Street Bakery, Treats From Oz, Uplift Food, and Starward Whisky. Thanks mates, we’re already looking forward to the next one!
