New Members Walk in Brooklyn Heights & DUMBO

AWNY Committee member, Susie Lang, joined the AWNY New Members Walk in Brooklyn in October. Here she describes how the local knowledge of host and AWNY New Members Lead, Robyn Sunderland, made the walk such a perfect event.

Saturday October 26 was a great day for a stroll for our AWNY New Members Walk on the Brooklyn side of the East River. Our wonderful “tour-guide”, New Members Co-Lead Robyn Sunderland, showed us the beauty of this part of the city. It’s the part that sometimes seems so far away from Manhattan that it could feel like a different country! Far from the truth though as it’s a part of New York City that is alive, thriving, well-celebrated and well-lived in. What a perfect fall (autumnal) day for it!

Our walk on Brooklyn Heights Promenade, heading down to and beyond the DUMBO neighborhood, took in amazing and sweeping views of lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, the bridges, New York Harbor, and all the visual and auditory richness of the city transport options: boats, the subway, helicopters and cars. Perhaps on a bad day, you might call it something different! We chatted and strolled together for a few hours. We felt that today could have possibly been the last day where we could walk out before the colder weather hit us. A great day.

We enjoyed an afternoon cuppa in one of Robyn’s favorite and less frequented coffee shops, The “Original” Brooklyn Roasting Company, on the corner of Jay and John Streets in the artistically vibrant and trendy neighborhood of DUMBO. Here, there were far fewer people. We imagined, local “Brooklynites” found this to be the place for a coffee and snack as opposed to the Brooklyn Bridge Park on Old Dock Road DUMBO, where the hustle and bustle of the busier ice cream, pizza and coffee joints were full of visitors from all over the world. There were no lines for food and drink and no lines to use the bathroom.

Thanks to you Robyn, for this great and fun afternoon. We did “rent a crowd” for our selfie, although sadly they were not keen to join our association but we’re always on the lookout for new members. Watch out for more New Member events, both large and small to suit every preference.

  1. Hi Ladies,
Lovely to meet Robyn with some of the other AWNY members at the New Members Drinks Mixer in November. It was so good to connect with the members, certainly makes the city feel less overpowering and impersonal during my third visit here.
Visiting Manhattan for nearly two months during my partner’s coffee business trip. Paul founded Xpressodelight, our franchise coffee business 16 years ago in Sydney. The exciting news is that we now have a head office in Wall Street and a growing contingent of new USA franchisees.
Amazing to share with him, this incredible journey of our business, especially for a country girl from Griffith, NSW.
I’m a 64 year old, retired primary school teacher, now residing with my family on the Gold Coast. If our proposed move eventuates in 2020, will be looking for buddies to explore NYC’s vast cultural and culinary experiences.
Thank you ladies for the evening, really enjoyed the catch up. It certainly made my visit feel very special, definitely will become a new member if I’m here permanently next year.
    Cheers and thanks again,
    Jane Combe

    1. Hi Jane,

Thanks for your lovely feedback, glad you were able to make it to the AWNY New Member Drinks Mixer.

We love having Robyn as part of our Committee as New Member Co-Lead (along with Dawn our other New Member Co-Lead) and they are both doing a tremendous job welcoming newcomers.

We wish you all the best for your business venture and look forward to seeing you again when next you’re in New York – hopefully very soon.

      Regards

      Angela,
      AWNY Communications Team Co-Lead
