AWNY has started a book club and our second meeting will be on Monday July 8th at The Liberty NYC. PLEASE NOTE THE DATE CHANGE. The book club’s theme is “America Through Fiction” and this month we will be discussing post-9/11 USA from a Muslim perspective through reading Mohsin Hamid‘s The Reluctant Fundamentalist. Please RSVP using the AWNY Book Club registration form.
July 23, 6pm: American-Australian Arts Showcase
Come along to a celebration of emerging artists at a showcase of diverse works by recipients of the American-Australian Arts Fund, at the Olsen Gruin Gallery. The showcase features a fiber art workshop conducted by Lucy Wanapuyngu, who practices and teaches fiber art in the Aboriginal community of Gapuwiyak in northeast Arnhem Land, Australia.

July 4: July 4th Celebrations
July 4th is one of the BIG events in the USA and if you’re in the city you might like to head out to Coney Island to see the Hotdog Eating Competition. After a day of eating hotdogs you can then get along to see the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks being launched from the East River
July 9, 8pm: Pub Choir at The Bell House
Everybody can sing, and Pub Choir is on a mission to prove it. Created by Australians, Astrid Jorgensen & Megan Bartholomew, Pub Choir now makes its way to New York. Be quick because their first show in New York has already sold out. July 10 – 14: Ladyship The Musical
This new Australian musical is making its world debut at the New York Musical Festival. The musical focusses on teenage Irish sisters, Alice and Mary, who are convicted of petty crimes and sentenced on a journey to an unknown land. Based on true events, Ladyship is the harrowing story of the 25,000 women who would become the “mothers of Australia”, whether they wanted to be or not. Tickets are $35 and available online, by phone and at the theater 30 minutes prior to the performance.

FREE – July 13: Playdates on the Hudson
Playdates take place on the second Saturday of each month from May through August. In June you can join a family-friendly outdoor party with WonderSpark Puppets presenting Goldilocks and The Three Bears , as well as arts and crafts, and neighborhood fun! 125th Street and Marginal Street in West Harlem Piers.
July 13-14: 2019 New York E-Prix
If you think you’ve seen everything in New York, think again. Formula E comes to the streets of Brooklyn’s Red Hook, with 22 drivers and 11 teams battling it out over 2 races, against the stunning backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. Back again, is everyone’s favorite summer music program, Summerstage. City Parks Foundation provides New York’s largest free outdoor performing arts festival. With renowned artists and rising stars from around the world presenting distinctly New York genres like salsa, jazz, and hip hop alongside indie, reggae, Afrobeat, soul, and modern dance.
FREE – Statue of Liberty Museum
Put a visit to newly opened Statue of Liberty Museum on your summer bucket list. It’s the perfect destination for your summer visitors. You’ll find a multi-sensory experience to immerse yourself in the story of the Statue and understand its history and significance. The stunning design of the museum is breathtaking, incorporating sustainability and accessibility. The museum admission is free, you’ll just need to pay for the ferry ride over from Battery Park.
Live recorded television programs are fun to catch. In New York there is The View, Good Morning America ABC, Rachel Ray and more. Don’t forget to wave to your friends back home! I have been meaning to visit the outdoor plaza of the Today Show at Rockefeller Center, so this will serve as my “note to self”.

Hannah Gadsby’s new show, Douglas, will cover how she dealt with her sudden fame after attacking comedy in Nanette. Gadsby’s Off Broadway engagement will take place at the Daryl Roth Theatre. Find tickets here.
Perth psych-pop band, Tame Impala, have announced new summer North American tour, including a show at Madison Square Garden on August 21.
New Zealand singer-songwriter, Aldous Harding returns to New York, playing the Music Hall of Williamsburg, on the wave of her uber-acclaimed release of 2019, Designer.
