What’s on in New York, March 2017

It’s March already and it feels like spring. The attitude we have encountered the most this winter was a mix of regret about climate change, zero regret about the lack of snow. We’re already feeling spring weather and despite not having the usual display of flowers, bursting buds, and the general opening up of public lawn space, we can still rock through this New York March like the spring loving, jasmine smelling Aussies that we are. Just don’t attempt a dip in the Atlantic. Yet.

Here’s a AWNY’s curated list of great events for the month of March in New York City. Enjoy!

The Maritime Academic Center (SUNY Maritime College, Throggs Neck, NY) is holding a free morning discussion on March 7 about James Cook’s Endeavour and the enduring bond between American – Australia maritime nations. The discussion commences at 8.30am. For more information visit the information page on the AAA website.

New York based Australian Artist Tanya Chaly has a solo exhibition at the Cluster Gallery, Brooklyn, from March 11th (opening) to April 1st.

Aussie Night at the Barclays Center is on March 28th. The Brooklyn Nets take on the Philadelphia 76ers at 7.30pm and you can enjoy a pre game social event from 6pm. Tickets and info available here.

St Patrick’s Day is nearly upon us and this is worth taking note of even if you’re not planning on attending any events (such is the ruckus that it causes!). Expect a sea of green through New York on March 17th and if you are going to brave the festivities, here’s a good guide to where to go and when.

The Architectural Digest Design Show is always worth a visit for anyone trying to make the most of tiny spaces or get inspired by amazing furnishing for apartment living. It’s open the public for three days over March 16-19 at Piers 92 & 94. More information and tickets available here.

The 12th annual Coffee and Tea Festival is on from March 18-19 and this year has more than 75 exhibitors. It’s held at the Brooklyn Expo Center and has been selected as one of ‘10 Best New York Events’ and featured on the Food Network. Tickets and info available here.

If you’ve been an avid reader of AWNY’s Start Up Stories blog series, then you might be interested in the NYU Entrepreneurs Festival, held on March 3-4 it is the largest student-run celebration of NYU entrepreneurs, start ups, and their visions. More information and tickets available here.

Save the date! The AWNY Annual General Meeting will held on April 17, venue TBC. Details will be included in next month’s What’s On and also on the AWNY Facebook page. The AGM is a great opportunity to get involved in the AWNY community through event, new member, communications, and executive positions. We hope to see you there!
