What’s On October 2015

October in New York brings amazing food and wine festivals, trick-or-treating galore, glorious Autumn foliage and we say goodbye to that humidity. The cold is still a long way off so make sure you get to one of the not-to-be-missed events on this month’s AWNY What’s On list.

Thursday October 1st – Sunday October 5th is the 8th Annual Bushwick Film Festival. Two Australian talents are in the line up this year, Tales of Tinder Directed by Emma Watts, and Eliot Trix Directed by Anna Outridge. Tickets for these films can be purchased here and here.

Friday October 2nd The Galway Pub, 7 East 36th Street is hosting an event for the 2015 AFL Grand Final. Tickets are $20 each or 4 for $60, with covers the live game telecast, drink specials, giveaways on the night and live music from Australia’s Dave Young. Doors open 10.00PM. The Australian , 20 West 38th Street is showing both the AFL Grand Final on Friday night ($10 cover charge from 9.00PM) and the NRL Grand Final at 4.00AM Sunday (replaying at 2.00PM if you can’t manage the early start).

Sunday October 4th is the inaugural AWNY/Australian Mums and Dad’s Picnic in the Park. From 2.00PM in Sheep’s Meadow, Central Park, A great event for all ages, there will be egg & spoon races, 3 legged races, limbo, and face painting for the kids. Pack a picnic, bring your blanket and enjoy a fun day out before winter sets in! Free but please RSVP to awny@aaanyc.org.

On Monday October 5th The Australian Girls Choir performs at St Paul’s Chapel, 209 Broadway, at 1.00PM. This free event will see 55 choristers from Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth perform well known Australian songs.

America Australia Association’s event Spotlight On: Aussies in Silicon Alley is not to be missed on Thursday October 8th. Running from 6.00PM-9.00PM, the event will feature young Aussie entrepreneurs who are surfing the tech wave and learning what it takes to run a successful start up in Silicon Alley. Tickets are $20 members, $30 non members.

Bettina Arndt, Australia’s first sex therapist, talks all things Sex, Desire and Dating on Wednesday October 13th at 6.30PM at Interface, 140 West 30th Street. The event costs $15 for members, $20 for non members.

New York Food and Wine Festival is on from Thursday October 15th – Sunday October 18th.  This event is being held over multiple venues and ticket prices vary. There are specialist classes (Cake Decorating with Billy’s Bakery, anyone?), celebrity talks and panel discussions, and brunches and lunches galore.

AWNY members are invited to join the Friends of Australian Wildlife Conservancy Photographic Exhibition, THE NEVER NEVER on Wednesday October 21 from 6.00PM – 9.00PM at 201 Mulberry Street. The Conservancy is asking for a donation in exchange for event attendance.

Halloween comes early to Central Park, with the annual Parade and Pumpkin Flotilla Festival taking place on Sunday October 25th, from 3.30PM. And check out this list for great Halloween events just for the little ones, and for the grown ups there’s always the Halloween Pub Crawl.
