By Alexandra Collier
On Friday April 3rd, AWNY members and friends hit Off Broadway to be immersed in the colloquialisms and landscape of home for a night of new Australian theatre in New York. Underland, a wild, funny and mythic play set in a small dusty Australian town, by award-winning Brooklyn-based Australian playwright Alexandra Collier is currently having its world premiere at 59E59 Theaters, produced by terraNOVA Collective (performances run till April 25 for those who missed it).
After the show, AWNY and the cast and crew – including Annie Golden (Orange is the New Black), Mia Rovegno (director), the playwright, producers and actors – celebrated at the stunning Upper East side home of Phil & Maria Cohen and were treated to a delicious cocktail punch donated by the Manhattan Cricket Club, savory delights and an endless supply of Tim Tams.
Underland cracks open the desert to reveal mythic beasts, Chekhovian love triangles and big sky blues, while giving the finger to everything Americans thought they knew about “Down Under” from Fosters’ commercials.
