AWNY is thrilled to be supporting the New York Magpies Women’s AFL team for a very special event.
The Queensland Fire Department Women’s AFL team is coming to New York as part of the 25th anniversary of September 11 commemorations.
On September 13 they will take on the NY Magpies at the beautiful Governors Island Parade Ground. The FDNY will also be joining with a special color guard ceremony. It promises to be a powerful celebration of sport, community, friendship and the connections between Australia and New York.
Following the women’s game, the men’s teams will play a scrimmage before everyone heads to the NY Magpies sponsor bar, Old Mates, to continue the celebrations.
AWNY would love to support our New York Magpies in the form of new team mates and a big AWNY crowd to support both teams at the game.
The NY Magpies are also looking for someone to sing the American national anthem and a photographer for September 13—please get in touch if either opportunity sounds like you!
Interested in trying AFL? No experience is necessary! The women train every Monday, 6–8pm at Brooklyn Bridge Park, Pier 5 Field 3, closest to the water (except Labor Day, September 7). There’s usually pizza and bevvies afterwards.
