On Tuesday, October 22nd, we hosted a stunning evening of networking and career insights at the American Australian Association’s 34th-floor event space. The warm glow of the autumn sunset bathed the room as around 50 attendees, ranging from newcomers to seasoned residents, gathered for “The Career Blueprint: Recruitment Tactics and Pivoting in the US Job Market.”
AWNY co-presidents Sarah McLellan Mee and Toni Wendtmann kicked off the event, setting the stage for a night of inspiring conversations. With her dynamic and witty style, host Mel Slade kept the energy high and encouraged the audience to engage and ask questions.
Our esteemed panelists offered invaluable insights into the US job market. Rob Leeds emphasized the importance of adapting your skills, selling yourself effectively, and the power of networking and follow-up. James Stanley reiterated the significance of referrals in securing interviews and landing US gigs. Gemma Mansfield, from an HR perspective, highlighted the importance of a strong digital presence and tailoring your resume to specific job descriptions. While she may not read cover letters, she stressed the importance of research, genuine interest, and showcasing why you’re the right fit for a company during interviews. Panelist BJ Jackson sent her apologies from Australia as she was unable to attend due to a family emergency.
The Q&A session provided a platform for attendees to delve deeper into specific topics, such as recruiter ghosting, the true meaning of coffee meetings, and the challenges of navigating the NYC job market.
It was a fantastic evening for all, filled with valuable information, networking opportunities, and a sense of camaraderie.
We hope you joined us for this enlightening event. If you missed it, stay tuned for upcoming AWNY events and opportunities to connect with our vibrant community.
