Event Recap: Movement in Conversation with Carole Y. Johnson & Dr. Alex Carter

What a night! Last Thursday at the American Australian Association, we hosted an incredible evening with Carole Y. Johnson and Dr. Alex Carter for “Movement in Conversation.” We were blown away by the amazing turnout of dancers, scholars, the Aussie and Kiwi community, and friends, who all gathered to celebrate Carole’s journey and impact on Indigenous dance. The atmosphere was buzzing as guests mingled over wine and delicious bites from Edy’s Grocer, soaking in the stunning views at Murdoch Center.

Our AWNY Presidents, Toni Wendtmann and Sarah McLellan Mee kicked things off with warm welcomes and heartfelt thanks to Carole and Alex. The chat was filled with historical snapshots from Carole’s illustrious career, from her days at Eleo Pomare Dance Company to her pioneering work with Bangarra Dance Theatre. Dr. Carter expertly guided us through Carole’s achievements and their significance in cultural education and activism.

The Q&A session was a highlight, with everyone eager to hear more about Carole’s journey and the broader impact of her work. We couldn’t be more grateful to Carole and Alex for sharing their insights and inspiration. Thank you to everyone who joined us—it was truly an honor to host such a meaningful event celebrating dance, culture, and community.
