After withstanding a New York winter, we think everyone deserves to bask in the beauty of the new season’s fresh cherry blossoms! There are so many parks to choose from, so AWNY has listed them out for you by borough so you can enjoy the new blossoms around New York.
Do You Know the Historical Symbolism of Cherry Blossoms?
In Japan, the cherry blossom season is called ‘Sakura,’ which symbolizes life and death. As springtime represents new life, it is seen that the cherry blossom brings a sense of vitality and vibrance. However, as it is only for a short time (cherry blossoms are the shortest blossoming flower), it also reminds us of how fleeting life can be. The welcoming of a new season also means we can cleanse and be ready for new beginnings ahead. So let the spring blossoms reawaken your senses and inspire a seasonal refresh!
Cherry Blossoms Symbolize:
- Rebirth
- Renewal
- New beginnings
- The start of Spring
The Best Cherry Blossoming Spots By Borough:
Manhattan
The concrete jungle wouldn’t be complete without its park areas, including the world-famous gem Central Park. (Did you know that approximately 25,000 people visit Central Park annually?)
- Sakura Park
- Marcus Garvey Park
- Little Island
- Roosevelt Island’s Four Freedom Park
- Randall’s Island Park
- Riverside Park’s Cherry Walk
- Central Park (featured below)
Brooklyn
Brooklyn has (in my opinion) some of the best fashion, food, art, and parks in New York. I love how huge and luscious Prospect Park is with its rolling hills, ponds, and places to sit and enjoy a good book. I highly recommend heading there to see the blossoms and add on a picnic date while you’re there.
- Prospect Park’s Long Meadow (featured below)
- Sunset Park
- Maria Hernandez Park
- Green-Wood Cemetery
- McCarren Park
Queens
I am lucky enough to call Queens home. From the great hidden food spots to parks, there are many reasons to love it.
Did you know Queens is the most linguistically diverse place in the world? With at least 138 languages spoken, Queens holds the Guinness World Record for “most ethnically diverse urban area on the planet.” We love it here!
- Hunters Point South Park
- Gantry Plaza State Park
- Cunningham Park
- Queens Botanical Garden’s Cherry Circle
- Flushing Meadows-Corona Park
Staten Island
Staten Island has been coined the ‘borough of parks’ because it has thousands of acres of open space and approximately one-third of parkland.
- Conference House Park
- Clove Lakes Park
- Silver Lake Park
- Snug Harbor’s Chinese Scholar’s Garden
