Why Join AWNY? Hear From Our Volunteers

Jenni Found Vibrant Connection and Friendship in AWNY

I moved to New York City with my family in March 2021. Covid was still making it difficult to meet locals and settle in. I was seconded to NYC for 6 months with my legal job in 2003, and all the friends I met were through the American Australian Association. So, in 2022, I thought, “Where do I find my tribe?” And I knew it would be the Aussies. I went to last year’s AGM and volunteered to be part of the group. Best thing I did. It’s a wonderful, supportive group of women who are a source of friendship, networking, and information on all things NYC. I’m so glad I made the decision to connect with these lovely ladies.

Toni Found The Joy of Shared Experiences

I had been based in Hoboken, NJ, for a number of years, and then COVID hit. Living on your own (especially during lockdown) was hard, so once the world started to open up again, I saw The Big Aussie BBQ event was happening, and that’s where I first met some of the AWNY leads. I signed up for the newsletters and attended my first event at Red Hook, where I met a number of wonderful women who I still call friends today. At last year’s AGM, I joined the events team and ended up moving into the Co-Lead of this team. One thing I love about going to our coffee catchups and events is connecting with old friends and also being able to pass on tips about first living in NYC with those who’ve just arrived. And, of course, when you walk in and hear an Aussie accent—it gives you that touch of home you sometimes need.

Maddy Found Affirmation and Belonging

After being in New York for five years, I felt adjusted to life here (as much as anyone can). I was quite used to being surrounded by Americans and thought that these types of groups were just for people who had “just arrived”. Honestly, I hadn’t felt Australian enough for a group like AWNY. Well, I’ve never enjoyed being wrong so much before, as half the women in AWNY have weird Frankenstein accents like me! (Haha) Regardless of what they’re pursuing in life, they made the same decision I did to be here, and I’ve found that incredibly affirming.

Emily Loves the Diversity and Inspiration AWNY Brings

Being a member of AWNY has helped me feel a lot more connected with the Aussie expat community here in NYC. The city can sometimes be overwhelming, and it’s reassuring to know that a solid group of Australian women are there to offer support (not to mention all the fun events that AWNY organizes). It’s also really inspiring to meet women of all ages, from all works of life, in their different NYC journeys – from women who have been here 20+ years to those who landed here 20 days ago!

Thinking of Joining a Committee? Here’s What You Need to Know

Are you interested in making a meaningful impact and expanding your network in New York City? We offer various avenues for you to contribute depending on your skills and interests. Here’s a closer look at what each of our five primary committees does:

Communications

This committee is responsible for curating and disseminating information across various platforms such as newsletters, social media, and our website. This could be your ideal committee if you have a knack for writing, graphic design, or a passion for social and digital media. We also work closely with the events team to help promote and publicize our events throughout the year.

Events

From garden parties, female-focused panels, and social get-togethers to educational seminars, the Events committee manages the planning, organization, and execution of all AWNY events. If you love orchestrating events that bring people together, this committee offers an exciting opportunity.

Community

The Community committee focuses on outreach, offering a support network for new arrivals and existing members alike. This team plans our monthly coffee and breakfast meetups and events like our signature Emotional Transitions discussion. Consider joining this committee if you’re interested in mentorship, community service, or simply connecting people.

Families (formerly Mums and Dads)

This committee provides resources and organizes events specifically geared toward families, such as playdates, seasonal meetups, school information sessions, and more. This committee is perfect if you’re a parent looking to help other families navigate life in NYC. This committee also has room for writers who’d like to share content surrounding family-friendly updates and ideas.

Partnerships

The Partnerships committee works on establishing and maintaining relationships with organizations, businesses, and other entities that can offer valuable resources and benefits to our members. If you have a talent for networking and negotiation, your skills will be well-utilized here.

Attending the AGM is the perfect first step if you’re keen to become more involved with AWNY. Submit your nomination before the event on October 18 to get started.
