(DAAM!) Defence Against Accent Mimickers

Having your accent mimicked (often quite poorly) is one of the quintessential experiences of being an Australian in the United States. It is often early on in our acquaintance with people. They throw in a ‘crikey’ to show that their masterful powers of perception are sharp as ever, and they have noticed you are, indeed, Australian. Those who fancy themselves global history aficionados may even joke that you’re descended from convicts. At this time, they are likely looking for a medal or profession of awe. I have been in the US for eight years and have found myself giving pity laughs to safeguard the sensitive feelings of those who think they’re the next Gary Oldman of accent mimicry. But no longer!  Here’s my (tongue in cheek) Defence Against Accent Mimickers guide to get you through.
