Summer in NYC is the season for spending time with the kids, and parents need some adult company too. In this month’s AWNY Mums and Dads update, there’s a run-down of fun summer activities for kids and parents, many of them free.
The AWNY ladies, along with one dad, kicked off the summer with a great night out at Tavern on the Green in Central Park on Friday 6 July. The weather was superb and the bubbly was flowing. These events are a lovely way to catch up in an informal environment, meet new Aussies as well as those who have been here for a long time! We all shared our life experiences and talked about what’s on for the summer with our families.
Are your kids in summer camp? Luckily, there are so many camps to choose from in New York City whether your kids are sporty, artistic, tech-savvy or future chefs! Here is a blog about a few different camps across the city that my kids have done over the years, which may help with last-minute plans.

If your kids are not doing camp there are also lots of FREE activities on offer across the city. You may have seen a few of the options I have posted on the Mums and Dads Facebook page over the summer. Some great activities include:
- Citi Summer in Union Square: offering a wide range of children’s activities for FREE every Thursday from now till Aug 9th. This includes animals, story time, dancing, pop fit kids, super soccer stars, gazillion bubble show etc. They are also offering plenty of FREE adult activities throughout the summer including health and fitness classes.
- Hippo playground – Upper West Side: offering summer concerts every Wednesday at 4pm from 25 July – 30 Aug. The location is the Hippo kids playground on W91st and Riverside.
- Broadway in Bryant Park: Thursday 12 July – August 16. Take a peek at the best of Broadway on stage in Bryant Park every Thursday from lunchtime (1pm). I stumbled across this last week and it was great fun. There are lots of performances from different Broadway shows including Spongebob Squarepants, Chicago, and Waitress. There is also lots of free stuff including snow cones, stickers, fans and discount tickets. While you are there you can’t leave without the kids riding on the carousel.
- NYC Public Library cards will now grant you access to select museums including Whitney Museum, MoMA, The Frick, Brooklyn Children’s Museum and more. Go to Culture Pass for more details and to register.
Marion and I are currently working on our next Australian Mums and Dads in NYC event, which will be an exclusive event in conjunction with top Aussie fashion label Scanlan Theodore on August 8, to take advantage of their end of season sale. More details will be provided shortly on the Aussie Mums and Dads in NYC Facebook group.
Feel free to drop us a line through the Facebook page or via awny@aaanyc.org. We hope to see you at a future AWNY Mums and Dads Group event.
