Australia Day in NYC 2018

This year Australia Day falls on Friday, January 26th, 2018, and with the growing number of Aussie-owned establishments across the five boroughs and beyond, there are more ways than ever before to celebrate Australia Day in NYC. Scroll through our 4th annual Australia Day in NYC Guide for festivities researched by Tarley Jordan and Joanna Hishon. Your Australia Day in NYC starts here…

 

Our parent organization, the American Australian Association is hosting the Australia Day Gala and Arts Awards in partnership with G’Day USA. To be held on Friday, Jan 26 for a 6:30pm start, this is a formal affair with a black tie dress code, and tickets are $1,000 (or $500 if you are under 35 years). Held at the beautiful Skylight Modern venue, your ticket includes passed canapés & open bar; chef created three-course dinner showcasing Australian food, Bird In Hand wine & sparkling rose, entertainment during the event, and an after party complete with more music, dancing and open bar.

Bar and restaurant The Australian is going all out with their ‘Australia Week’ line-up!

  • Monday 22nd – Aussie movies from 5pm, Crocodile Dundee, The Castle, Lion
  • Tuesday 23rd – Aussie movies from 5pm, Finding Nemo, Muriel’s Wedding, Priscilla Queen of the Desert
  • Wednesday 24th – Wine, cheese and Aussie trivia from 8pm
  • Thursday 25th – Aussies Got Talent open mic night from 7pm
  • Friday 26th – Australia Day party with the Hottest 100 playing live from 8pm
  • Saturday 27th – Australia Day part 2 with the Hottest 100 replay from 11:30am, and the Hottest 200 playing from 8pm

Benson’s are partnering with the Aussies in NYC Meetup group and holding a Hottest 100 party from 5pm on Sat Jan 27.

Burke & Wills are offering an all Australian/all night Happy Hour at the bar with $5 Coopers Draft Beer & $5 Burke & Wills House Wine. Burke & Wills is also participating in Restaurant Week, which will be available on Australia Day. Check out their set menu here where you can score a 3-course lunch for $29 & dinner for $42.

Flinders Lane are hosting an ‘Aussie Barbie’ with some classic dishes as specials in addition to their regular Aussie-inspired menu. Two Hands at their Tribeca restaurant are hosting an Aussie Day Happy Hour with $5 beers & $15 burgers from 3PM till sold out. At both locations (Tribeca and Nolita), there will be $2 Flat Whites ALL DAY!

If you live in Queens, the Thirsty Koala is your best bet. They will be open from 5PM – midnight on Jan 26. Happy hour goes from 5PM – 8PM with Coopers Pale Ale and Fosters Crown Lager On Tap. Their menu includes Aussie favourites including pies and sausage rolls, beer battered fish and chips, short-rib brisket burger with the lot, plus for the sweet tooth there will be lamingtons, pavlova, caramel slice, sticky date pudding and ANZAC biccies.

Our Kiwi friends at DUB Pies have got your Australia Day needs covered at the office. They have a couple of hot drop-off catering delivery slots available for lunch on Jan 25th and Australia Day Jan 26th if want to share the love with your work mates. Minimum orders that day are set at $500 (great for feeding the office pies, sausage rolls and lamingtons). The Craftsman on the UWS is holding an Australia Day party from at 6pm on Jan 26. They’re loading up the bar with Four’N Twenty pies and Coopers Ale and Stout. They’ll also have Masterfood’s tomato sauce on hand to top off that pie.

Throwing your own Australia Day party? Let Tuckshop Pies do all the hard yakka and order your pie and sausage rolls online. This is Tuckshop’s busiest time of year, so get in quick for regular-sized pies and rolls, party-sized pies and rolls, and even lamingtons!

Bluestone Lane will be having a full Australia Day.  They will have meat pies, sausage rolls, lamingtons, caramel slice and of course Avo Smash, flat whites and Aussie Ice Lattes. They’re also running a quiz with the winners going into the draw to win a killer prize.

On Jan 26, Wattle Cafe in Murray Hill will have $2 flat whites all day, as well house-made Caramel slices. Given people often assume they are a “WAFFLE” cafe they plan to put an Aussie spin on classic American waffles with house-made lamington waffles, in addition to popular Tim Tam waffles. For those with a savory tooth, they will also have Four’N Twenty pies.

Aussie restaurant Banter will be doing a yummy Aussie-themed 3-course set menu for $40 bucks per person (+ tax + tip). Picture this: starting with corn on the cob, lamb ribs or prawns & calamari, followed by chicken or eggplant parmy, and for dessert either lamington cake or pavlova. Wash that down with half-price espresso martinis ALL DAY and NIGHT. COBS Bread Bakery at Stamford, CT, will be making a few good batches of Cheesymite scrolls on Friday for Australia Day. Yup, just like the ones from Baker’s Delight back home. Each scroll will go for US$3.75 each.
