Chantelle Sturt is a Melbourne girl who has landed her dream job with entrepreneur and founder of Business Chicks, Emma Isaacs. We chat to Chantelle on the eve of launching Business Chicks into the US market (including a luncheon with Rachel Zoe on July 10), and how she has fallen in love with New York after just 9 months.
How did you get your job in NYC?
I work as the Communications and Operations manager for Business Chicks USA. Emma Isaacs and Business Chicks came into my life about 2 1/2 years ago, while I was working as a book publicist for Penguin Random House in Australia. She wanted Penguin’s biggest international author for an event (Business Chicks have brought several well known authors to Australia, including Brené Brown, Seth Godin, and Simon Sinek). Working alongside the Business Chicks team is a dream for me! The girls have such a can-do approach to make things happen and do it all with a positive spirit. I’m a firm believer in paying forward the good things that come your way and Business Chicks is all about helping women (and men) reach their full potential.
Tell us more about Business Chicks!
We’re gathering great minds and big hearts; women who want to grow, give, seed, and make beautiful connections with like-minded souls. I am beyond excited about our North America launch, starting with San Francisco on July 7 with Jane Wurwand, Los Angeles on July 8 with Arianna Huffington, and New York on July 10 with Rachel Zoe.
Have you met some other Aussie ladies doing awesome things in NYC
Yes. There are so many generous, smart, and successful Aussie women in New York! Narell Devine from The Crosby, Tamara Gibb from MOET, Alice Hampton from UGG, Liz Fitzgibbon from Emirates, and designers Rachael Ruddick and Samantha Wills.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given about living/working in NYC?
“It’s a shiny toy, but it’s a tough city” – It’s important to look after yourself and not burn out. Remember self-care. There will always be a thousand things to do each night in New York, don’t get caught up thinking you’re missing out. I always make time to run along the Hudson and burn off the day’s adrenalin, or head to Central Park and zone out with a good book.
What’s your ‘only in New York’ moment?
There are many but my top pick is a night at The Beacon Theatre, a room full of fabulous gay men, and my No.1 New York girl, Mariah Carey, singing “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”
Where do you live and why did you choose that area?
I moved to New York to live in Manhattan! I live on the west side, on the border of Chelsea and Hell’s Kitchen.
What do you like about living in NY?
I love the pace, the energy, it doesn’t tire me, it spurs me on to do more!! New Yorker’s are so positive, and they love to network, this is my city.
Favorite NYC brunch spot
I love Bubby’s in the Meatpacking District or Café Cluny in The West Village.
Favorite NYC cocktail spot & cocktail of choice
A martini with a twist of lemon from Weather Up in Tribeca is a favorite.
Anything you miss about Australia?
Mum’s Sunday night lamb roast and Speckles from Haigh’s Chocolates.
What do you like about being part of AWNY?
Celebrating Aussie girls kicking ass in New York! I’m loving the support and engagement this community provides. We’re so lucky to have it.
