Having your accent mimicked (often quite poorly) is one of the quintessential experiences of being an Australian in the United States. It is often early on in our acquaintance with people. They throw in a ‘crikey’ to show that their masterful powers of perception are sharp as ever, and they have noticed you are, indeed, Australian.
