🌳 AWNY Families Spring Picnic 🌼

On Sunday 18th May, 15 families got together in Central Park to celebrate the spring weather. Here’s a report in the form of a poem from Liz Partridge, AWNY Families co-leader.

In Central Park, where tulips bloom,
We claimed a patch with so much room—
Blankets spread and eskies near,
Voices ringing bright with cheer.

From Sydney’s shores and Kiwi hills,
They came with cricket dreams and thrills.
Four-year-olds with wild-eyed pride,
Bat in hand, they’d swing (then hide).

Eleven-year-olds, the seasoned crew,
Cheered them on like pros would do.
“Nice shot, mate!” rang across the green,
In this muddy-shoed, sunlit scene.

Giant badminton took to air,
Shuttlecocks flying everywhere.
Cookies lined up, a rainbow spread—
Frosting fingers, icing red.

Puppies dashed with tangled leads,
Sniffing sandwiches, chasing seeds.
Names exchanged with laughs anew—
“You’re from Perth?” “Me too!” “No way, true?”

A tree became a jungle gym,
With squeals and socks on every limb.
Little legs in leafy sway,
Their giggles wrote the day away.

By sunset’s gold, the games would slow,
Still smudged with grass from head to toe.
One more photo, one more bite,
Then hugs beneath the fading light.

So here’s to spring, to playful noise,
To cricket bats and shared joys—
For memories bloom best, you see,
With mates, some mud, and a climbing tree.
